Derin was born in 1981 in Istanbul, Turkey. He graduated from German High School of Istanbul in Turkey and received his BS degree with high honors from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in Bogazici University in 2004. His undergraduate thesis was "Multispectral and Hyperspectral Image Compression" under the supervision of Prof. Emin Anarim in Bogazici University.
In the summer of 2001, he worked as a research scholar in University of Nebraska at Lincoln with Prof. Khalid Sayood on new prediction schemes in lossless image compression. This work has also been extended to lossless / near-lossless compression of hyperspectral images and both works have been published in Data Compression Conference.
Derin joined IVPL in 2004. He received his Master's degree in 2006; his master's thesis is entitled "Spatiotemporal Algorithms for Joint Background Subtraction and Video Segmentation" and was completed under the supervision of Prof. Thrasyvoulos Pappas. During his master's he has also worked with Prof Aggelos Katsaggelos on Scalable Video Coding in the development of the emerging video standard (Scalable Extension of H.264).
In the summers of 2006 and 2007, he did two summer internships in the Photoshop group at Adobe Systems Inc., under the supervision of Dr. Todor Georgiev. He worked on computational photography, specifically the acquisition, compression, presentation and various other applications of light-field images, as well as new camera designs.
He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree under the guidance of Prof Aggelos Katsaggelos. He is working on Bayesian techniques for image recovery, which includes image restoration, blind deconvolution, super resolution and compressive sensing. His current work focuses on hierarchical Bayesian modeling and variational distribution approximations for parameter and latent variable estimation.
Derin is recipient of an IBM Best Student Paper Award for ICIP 2007, a Smith Dissertation Fellowship (2008-2009), and a Walter P. Murphy Fellowship (2004-2005).
